Samsung, which is among the largest companies in the world for electronics like TV's and mobile devices, as announced it will be releasing the first ever curved display smartphone come October. This innovation by Samsung underscores its quest to remain competitive in the mobile market, and at the same time, attempting to diversify and differentiate itself from other players like Apple.
The company made its announcement during the launch of its Galaxy Gear Smartwatch and Galaxy Note 3. Korean news bureau and Reuters quoted Samsung's business president, Lee Don-joo, making confirmations that plans were underway to launch the curved screen smartphone in South Korea. Unfortunately, he did not provide the exact date of release, the price, nor the details and where the product will be available.

Samsung Announces New Curved Display Smartphone

During this year's CES, Samsung showed off the flexible Youm technology. The Youm display could actually form an arch or in simple terms, it would be curved especially at the edges making it possible for the screen to be viewed, partially from its inside. In the short term however, flexible displays would possibly not appear on the Samsung mobiles. According to Yonhap, the smartphone planned to be released next month, will feature a diode that emits organic light, curved, but not necessarily flexible.
Although curved screens are integrated on many Samsung TV's, they are actually very rare among smartphones. Samsung has been doing everything possible to be unique and the company sees big opportunities with the curved smartphone. According to Brian Berkeley, the senior vice president of Samsung lab, the new form factor will presumably change the way people relate with their devices. Further expounding the benefits are new versions of Corning's Gorilla Glass which may be flexible and strong enough for use in curved displays.

Berkeley demonstrated how a phone screen that is normally curved along the edges opens up allowing more space to view the content. A plastic display screen that is bendable and unbreakable could also be used but there is a lot of uncertainty concerning what the new would be; whether plastic or something close to it.

Previously, Samsung has been able to make a OLED TV with a curved screen and a Galaxy Nexus smartphone which had a slight curve in its screen. The new model however, is expected to take the concept further. If everything works perfectly well, then a curved screen may further boost the status of Samsung as a leader on the innovation front. Over the past few years, Samsung have outsold the products of its competitors and thus this new innovation would see it take a step further.
