Since the introduction of mass-market Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services in 2004, the popularity of VoIP technology has skyrocketed. More and more social media and communication companies are offering new VoIP options every year. This year is no exception to that rule. Three of the new VoIP services launching or upgrading this year are Facebook’s FaceTime, Viber and Rebtel.
Rebtel is another great VoIP option that is upgrading their services. They recently updated their program to allow iOS and Android application makers to embed their service in their app, for free. This will allow Rebtel to take business away from the major mobile carriers, as well as competitors such as Callfire and TelAPI. By allowing application developers to embed Rebtel into their apps, the service is able to spread rapidly among both developers and app users. With over 750,000 developers and approximately 1.5 million current apps, this is a huge market that is continually growing. In the future, Rebtel plans to provide an added pay option to give increased functionality to users willing to pay for the service.
These are just three of the new VoIP services being offered at this time. With more being announced almost every day, VoIP is quickly becoming a popular option for voice services. If this trend continues into the future, it could eventually replace traditional phone calling methods.
Facebook Launch FaceTime
Facebook currently has a popular messenger application, and in the future they will be adding VoIP calling to this service. The new feature is called FaceTime. If the consumer has a Wi-Fi connection, they can log into their Facebook Messenger and call their friends for free. Currently only Canadian users can test this feature, but in the near future other countries will be able to use FaceTime as well. In addition, it is only presently available for iOS, but an Android version is in the making. With it only in the testing phase it is hard to tell if FaceTime will become more than a series of tests, but if it does Facebook will change the way we make calls.
Viber Desktop App
Another VoIP application known as Viber has seen some recent updates. Before this update users could only use Viber on iOS and Android. Now Viber can be used on Mac and PC computers as well. With the application update, the user can transfer calls between their iPhone and PC or Mac. If the user receives a message it will display on all of the applications, but only chime on the device the user is using at the time. This goes for the deletion of messages as well. If an individual deletes the messages off of one device, the others will no longer have the messages either.
