The original Apple I computer may appear to be an ancient piece of technology that's hardly capable of performing any valuable functions. However, since this historic computer was the first major PC that Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak put on the market, it could be worth some serious coin.
The Apple I is being auctioned at Christie's, a popular auction house for historic and high-dollar items. The online auction for this piece has already started, but will continue until July 9. Experts predict that the final price of the Apple I will exceed $500,000.
Ted Perry, the current owner of the Apple I computer, claims that this ancestral PC is a historic relic that has revolutionized the computer and electronics industries. He initially got his hands on the Apple I by trading for other computer equipment - a deal that he claims was well worth it.
The Apple I computer hardly looks like a PC compared to today's technology. From the eye, it looks like a jumbled piece of green plastic with various computer chips and wires coming out. Yet, when the computer was put on the market, the price tag was a firm $666.66.
A computer repair technician fully examined the Apple I computer and it is said to function like new. The computer expert also confirmed that the motherboard completely original, however other parts, like the computer monitor and the keyboard, were added at a later date. All in all, the computer has not undergone any significant computer repairs.
Since the death of Steve Jobs back in 2011, vintage Apple computers and other electronics have sold for jaw-dropping prices. For instance, a German auction house closed the bidding on another Apple I for $671,400. Similar Apple I computer models have sold for $375,000 and $640,000, so this particular auction should present an interesting outcome.
The Apple I was created in 1976 and inevitably set the tone for the company's future technology innovations. This particular Apple I computer will be on display in California's Mountain View Computer History Museum.
